Laura Robbins celebrates what is important to her: the imagination and the sacred. In her mosaic work, she combines glass with hand-made glazed clay forms and other objects, such as stone, to create large murals and small intimate scenes of unique designs. Her work moves between whimsical and personal images of nature and organic, abstract designs. The exquisite properties of stained glass are especially interactive with light and the mosaics take on lives of their own as reflections change throughout the day, whether inside or out of doors.

Laura's home is in the foothills of the Sandia mountains in New Mexico. she shares her ridge top with her family and artist-friends, as well as hawks, ravens, rattlesnakes, rabbits, coyotes, beloved wild horses and horny toads.

I trust that the destructive forces which we as humans practice so diligently are counter balanced by the recognition of beauty, spontaneous and natural order, and the stories and images that have been most meaningful to us in our lives. Swimming within the creative spirit connects us to wisdom and joy.

All symbols of animals, plants and organic or geometric forms evoke memories and associations. Icons such as the raven, the phoenix, the spiral and the elephant are part of our collective consciousness. For me, the mosaic play allows a symbol (identifiable or abstract) to manifest itself through spontaneous moments when shards of glass create unplanned and surprising directions of movement and space.

Heart and imagination call me to create images. They are eyes of spirit and mystery. When working in the quiet of my studio or garden, the mosaic process becomes a meditation. I delight when ravens fly by, announcing themselves as I'm working on a raven piece.

Learned technique becomes my ally in beautifying the unknown. the final image coexists with the experience of allowing the piece of art to create itself and take on new life.
